For vitamins and minerals the daily need is based on the standard of recommended daily allowance or RDA. RDA vitamin D means the daily amount of vitamin D that should be taken to avoid deficiency.

This is misleading as the vitamin D deficiency can cause several other problems before getting extreme enough to cause rickets. And the level is same till today 200 IU for all people till 50 years although it is increased to 400 IU for people between 50 to 70 and 600 IU for people more than 70. But these values are still very low. According to the studies it is found that today human is far beyond the shining health. In fact the most of scientist believe that 80% of people in world are suffering from vitamin D deficiency.

In contrast to this 200 IU RDA vitamin D, new researches have shown that people who don't get enough sun exposure would also benefit from any dose between 1000 IU to 5000 IU daily. In some cases where vitamin D deficiency is present much higher dose are also used. It can sound like an extreme amount but in reality 1000 IU means 0.025 milligram of vitamin D.
